Memorial Day

Hello Friends~

With Memorial Day's fast approach I am thinking about
a few things.

1.  My mom who I miss each day

2. Getting my gardens finally planted
I know I'm late, but with rain and cold weather most
of the month I am willing to bet I am not alone on this one!

3. Going to the flea markets in spirit lake IA
Have you ever been to any of the holiday weekend fea markets?
I am a huge dumpster diver/antique collector, I especially love to
find awesome new props at these sales.. this year i am in search of a
few things I have in mind such as a kids pedal car & cool old chairs and
the perfect kids tea party table , and a tea set.

4.Photography ( for me)
get out your camera's and don't forget to capture your own families memories!

5.  Spending time with family and friends
Laughing, playing & eating really good food

I love to cook, was a real chef for a while. I had a 30 year career  managing restaurants, bars & country clubs. I sometimes think my cooking is why Joe married me and my kids love me LOL  but not their friends when they were little they thought my kids mom cooked weird.. Kids!   Ok , I'll admit I tend to not cook the ordinary things, just a bit different, more on the gourmet side :)

I never use a recipe, but I love to figure out what's in something and coming up with
my own recipe to recreate the foods I enjoyed.  Friends will always ask me for a recipe for something I made , most of the time I can  only share a ingredient list and
a approximation of amount with them as I never measure anything either. My Aunt Velma was a fabulous cook , she was a farm wife and the school cook, back in the day when school food was good food. Especially if you went to Owatonna Schools in Minnesota and she cooked for you! I had the privilege of growing up watching this woman create miracles in the kitchen and as I grew I was given a stool to stand on and a apron to help create those miracles with her.  Her pancakes were to die for and as big as your plate HUGE!  she would feed about 20 of us on Sunday mornings on the farm.. Can you even imagine flipping pancakes for that many people!

With Memorial Day coming this weekend I had to plan the big celebration menu and with that in mind I put together a few things old and  new to me to try out and thought I would share with you the few great recipes that I am planning to put on my memorial day menu this year.  ~Enjoy!

My Memorial Day Menu

Well , now I am really hungry and can't wait to make, share & eat these!
I hope each and every one of you have a Fun & Fabulous Holiday weekend
with your friends and family enjoying great food among other things!

SUMMER STYLIN FUN! ~ FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER, SOUTH DAKOTA

ARE YOU WONDERING WHAT TO WEAR?

Before every session I get a bunch of questions from all my clients - what to wear being the number one !  Along with that I get asked  should we all match?  Should I get new outfits? and so on.  I always try to tell the mom to relax and not to stress.

Here is a bit of advice for everyone- It will be very helpful, I promise.

You are what you wear.

A little cliche' ? Perhaps, but when it comes to portrait photography, clothing plays a huge role in the success of the finished product.

Before we get started- Let's be clear what your clothing does NOT need to be.

1. BRAND NEW
Rip jeans, retro brand T's and worn converse shoes are ok as long as you know how to rock them in your own fabulous style!

2. FANCY SCHMANCY AND UBER - EXPENSIVE
Unless it's your thing?  if it is by all means baby bring on the bling! but if you are not
normally a dress up kind of person don't feel like you have to be one for your session.

3. MATCHING
No need to focus on matching everything from the color of your fuchsia head bands to the stripes in your socks. In fact, I beg of you not to do that!
If you are set on everyone in white shirts and khaki pants that is up to you but it can be a
bit boring and cliche' .

4. STRESSFUL
No need to worry about each and every item, or about the suitability of each accessory.
This is supposed to be fun! If you're unsure- call me, and together we'll make sure you look fabulous!  I promise.

I want you to be happy, thrilled, over the moon about your images and i know that this is much more likely if we take the time and work together to help you choose clothing that fits these few simple rules:

FEELS GOOD.
During  your shoot you could be sitting in a pile on the grass having a tickle battle, rolling down a hill with our fiance, throwing your kiddo's in the air or climbing a tree!
Wear clothing that lets you do all that (and more) comfortably.

As for kids? well...uncomfortable kids have a tendency to look.... Uncomfortable, and are often cranky to boot!  Happy Kids make for happy pictures.

BOTTOM  LINE:

Don't choose outfits that make any of you feel constrained, stiff, itchy, scratchy, like you're dressed up for Halloween, or that leaves you with a nagging worry that a button might pop if you bend the wrong way.

LOOKS GOOD:

If you are not a fashionista you might want to pull in some extra help from a straight talking friend or your trusty photographer (that would be me) who knows about such things and has plans in place to help.

Bottom line: If you don't feel fabulous in your outfit, you're not going to love love love the end result- and I'm all about  you love love loving the end result.

MAKE SENSE:

Here's where we pull it all together. It's not just enough that everyone look good and feel good- you've gotta look and feel good together AND the outfits should fit with your location and the desired mood for your portraits.

Gulp! That seems like a lot, doesn't it?Quick! revisit #4 in the top list and remember- DON'T STRESS!).

Before you even begin figuring out your wardrobe, we'll have an in depth consultation to narrow down what you really want for your pictures, choose the perfect locations and make sure you have an understanding about how that all comes together in the finished photograph.

I'm with you every step of the way!

If you're still not certain, and you can't decide between the yellow wrap dress with your red heels or your dark skinny jeans and purple belted shirt- I've got good news for you!

You don't have to decided. Bring lots of options!  Heck-throw your whole wardrobe into the back of the car, and when we get to the session, we'll wing it all with fabulous results!
Trust me!

Now take a deep breath, close your eyes, Imagine how blow everyone away fabulous , ready for Americas top model,  you're all going to look in those pictures with you amazingly-well behaved never cranky always smiling never messy faces children..

Can you see it yet?  I totally can!  OMG  You look Incredible! ~   I can't wait for your session!

BECAUSE TIME FLIES & MEMORIES FADE...

When I was putting all the little details of  my photography business together
I had to come up with things like a business name and a tag line to go with it.
"Because time flies & memories fade.." became mine for a very special reason.

As Mother's Day Nears I have been thinking a lot about my mom.
I think a lot about her each and every day.

My mom had lung cancer at 65 yrs young,  and it metabolized in the brain as well.  She went through radiation treatments prior to her departure for wintering in Florida.  We spoke on the phone often that winter when she came back in the spring her cancer had spread and was going to begin chemo on mothers day.

This mothers day will be two years since I quit my jobs &  left South Dakota & my family to go back home to  Minnesota to be with my mom on that mothers day. ( our last together) long story short I ended up staying with my mom for the next 8 months.  I am forever grateful to my family for the gift they gave me of letting me go live with my mom and care for her full time.

During that time I of course had my camera gear and asked my mom to sit for a portrait we had plenty of "snap shots" of mom and all of us from over the years but nothing formal.  Of course she had no hair and wore a wig but my mom for the first time in my life showed a little vanity and refused to have a picture taken until her hair grew back.

Of course we all believed she would beat the cancer and  I would hold her too her promise of a formal portrait.  I continued to take "snap shots" as the days , weeks and months went by.  But we never got that formal portrait taken and on this mothers day that is all I can think about how time flies by and when they are gone some memories are so faded away you can only remember bits n pieces.  Pictures I have plenty and I cherish each and every one of them as they help me to remember all the good times I had with her and most importantly " how she used to look"

Cancer and it's treatments distorts more than just the body of the cancer victim it also distorts our memories. My mom was hardly recognizable in the end and after being her full time caregiver for 8 months it was hard for me in my mind to remember exactly how she used to look as I had gotten so used to seeing the cancer.

Me and mom (our last time out to dinner Oct 09)
Our last mother's day together at her lake home in MN

I thank god each and every day for all the pictures I have to help me to see her face again when I close my eyes and think of her.  But I will forever regret never having a formal portrait of my mom.

My little studio is dedication to my mother, to help others capture their loved ones and memories before time fades them away.  My mom and my grandma both gave up living their dreams and it is because of them that I am now living mine.  Happy mother's day to you mom and Grandma.. I love and miss you both so much!

Still Figuring it all out here

I am still finding my way around here.. Haven't had much time this past week to really devote to blogging
I suspect that it will take me a bit to make it a habit and to find a few time slots in my busy week to devote
to writing, and finding fun things to bring here for you.

I did have a few cuties in the studio this past week and would love to share a few of their images
here for you. And for me to make sure i know how to even put an image on here :-)

First Up is Shelan who is 9 months old and gorgeous!

And This is Parker,Ain't he cute!  Parker is  6 months old and couldn't sit up quite yet on his own but he is so close!  I just loved the little hat that mom had for him.

Hope this works..Enjoy!
